Solicitor – Regulatory

Contract: Permanent
Salary: Dependent on experience
Office base: Wigan, WN3 5BA – hybrid working available after a period of onboarding, with a minimum of 2–3 days per week in the office (or as agreed with the Department Manager)
Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

The Role

As a Solicitor in our Regulatory team, you will advise and assist a wide range of commercial and professional clients across regulatory and enforcement matters.

The role covers a broad spectrum of work, including professional misconduct proceedings, regulatory enforcement action, appeals against regulatory decisions, and criminal investigations and prosecutions. The department undertakes a mix of privately funded and insurance‑funded work, offering variety and strong opportunities for development.

You will manage your own caseload, provide clear and pragmatic advice, and represent clients confidently and professionally, while working closely with colleagues across the firm to deliver excellent outcomes.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Managing a varied caseload across the department’s key workstreams, including:
    • Professional Discipline
    • Care Quality Commission (CQC) enforcement
    • Ofsted enforcement
    • Regulatory Defence
    • Motoring Offences
  • Advising clients and responding to enquiries by phone, email, and in person
  • Drafting legal documents, correspondence, and advice
  • Preparing matters for hearings, including instructions to Counsel and compliance with procedural deadlines
  • Attending hearings, client meetings, conferences with Counsel, and interviews under caution where required
  • Undertaking full risk assessments on all matters and ensuring compliance with SRA rules and internal procedures
  • Managing work in progress effectively to ensure accurate time recording and conversion to paid profit
  • Actively managing disbursements and debtors to minimise financial risk
  • Delegating work appropriately to maximise efficiency, profitability, and team development
  • Identifying cross‑referral opportunities and promoting the Stephensons brand
  • Maintaining high standards of client care and compliance with complaints procedures
  • Keeping training and CPD records up to date

Essential:

You will need:

  • To be a qualified Solicitor with a current practising certificate
  • Experience in regulatory law or a background in criminal or commercial law with a clear interest in specialising in regulatory practice
  • Strong drafting, analytical, and organisational skills
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant regulatory, criminal, or enforcement procedures (commensurate with experience)
  • Good understanding of professional conduct obligations
  • Confidence using IT systems and willingness to learn new technologies
  • A flexible and proactive approach to work

Desirable:

It would be beneficial, though not essential, if you also have:

  • Experience dealing with regulatory bodies (e.g. CQC, Ofsted, professional regulators)
  • Advocacy or hearing experience
  • Experience of insurance‑funded work
  • Familiarity with case management systems
  • Knowledge of client care and complaints procedures
